Catalogue published on the occasion of the exhibition of the same name: Messages from the wall. Posters in the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum Collection (1886-1975).
The catalogue’s 416 pages feature more than two hundred works belonging to the Fine Arts Museum’s extensive collection of over a thousand old posters, selected by Mikel Bilbao Salsidua, professor at the Department of Art History and Music of the University of the Basque Country.
These include works by pioneering poster designers such as Jules Chéret, Eugène Grasset and Théophile Alexandre Steinlen, as well as international designers such as Leonetto Cappiello, Raymond Savignac, Saul Bass, Milton Glaser, Jan Lenica, Armando Testa and Shigeo Fukuda, among others. We also find works by Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró, Eduardo Chillida and Agustín Ibarrola…
The catalogue also includes a selection of Basque poster art in the field of advertising, produced by painters such as Adolfo Guiard, Aurelio Arteta, Antonio de Guezala or Elías Salaverría, and great illustrators such as Rafael de Penagos, Federico Ribas, Emilio Ferrer, Josep Morell, Manolo Prieto and Josep Artigas…
In 2016, this publication took second place in the Art Books category of the Best Books Published in 2015 prize. This prize is awarded each year by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport.
The catalogue was printed by Grafilur (four-colour offset + varnish). When it came to the binding, we opted for a thread-sewn hardcover with a straight spine, resulting in a very attractive yet manageable book. It measures 20.5 x 33 cm (vertical), an ideal size for presenting this type of work.
