Mendi Bi/Dos Montañas (Two Mountains) is a publication project in the form of a book-catalogue that reflects on the notion of place when associated to a particular enclave whose physical characteristics have been coated with symbolism in an environment that has been inhabited since a remote past. From the work developed in two exhibits –”Escuchar o entender el mapa” and “Montaña Interna” (“Listening to or understanding the map” and “Internal Mountain”) – diverse aspects are considered relative to the idea of a mountain as circumstance, but above all as a generator of meaning, referring to both our collective and individual identity.
Upon reflecting on our cultural relationship to nature, and specifically, to the mountain, from two places, two aspects (exterior/interior) and two interconnected exhibits, both works present a reflective image, the first through a specific mountain (Praileaitz) that has disappeared as a result of quarry operations, while inside it held the remains of 17,000 year old rituals; the second, regarding a specific mountain (Anboto) whose sacred connotations have lost meaning, in part relative to the existence of a cave on the upper part of one of its faces. The association of meanings, the reality of its nature or evolution of the existing feminine/masculine binaries all form this work held at the aforementioned exhibits, hoping to expand upon, or culminate in this publication project.
