The Noctis Photo Books publishing house has published a new book titled “BOX“, by Iñaki Mendizabal.
The title “BOX” is misleading because in this book of photography the author is using boxing to transport us to other more meandering levels full of resonance and stimulation, beating a vigorous rhythm akin to a boxing ring to evoke other landscapes. Pain, solitude, discipline, silence, defeat… This is common ground for all humanity, but in boxing it takes on such intensity that the activity becomes a mirror of life itself, in this case the darker side of life.
Mendizabal invites us in this way to visit a universe that may seem chaotic and alien and puts before us a world that is fictitious but nevertheless as believable as the real one. The photographer illustrates a dark harmony, as raw as it is beautiful, using the spider web formed by the sixteen ropes, but leaves it to the reader to make any interpretations that may emerge from it. We say reader because BOX is a book meant to be read as much as it is a book of images. But be careful, because like the wild frenzy of a boxing match it will leave you exhausted in the deepest depths of darkness.
Beyond the hallucinatory flavours of BOX, and as is frequent in such personal creative work, the photographer makes his ghosts and internal world visible to everyone, in addition to his highly personal vision of boxing, which gives the book an inexorable halo of self-referentiality.
